Overview

What Is the Rolex Certified Pre-Owned Program?

Quick Answer

The Rolex Certified Pre-Owned (RCPO) program is Rolex’s own brand-backed certification for second-hand Rolex watches. Launched in December 2022, it allows Rolex Authorized Dealers — not third-party resellers — to sell used Rolex watches that have been inspected, authenticated, and guaranteed by Rolex itself. Every certified watch comes with a new two-year international guarantee and the official Rolex CPO seal. As of 2026, the program operates across approximately 271 retail doors in 154 retailers worldwide.

Before December 2022, Rolex had never had an official presence in the pre-owned market. Millions of used Rolex watches changed hands every year through independent dealers, grey market resellers, online platforms, and private sales — entirely outside any brand-controlled framework. Rolex’s decision to create a certified pre-owned program was a significant shift: for the first time, the brand itself stood behind the authenticity of a second-hand watch at the point of sale.

The program was initially launched with Bucherer — at the time one of Rolex’s largest retail partners, later acquired by Rolex — in six European countries. It expanded to the United States in May 2023 through Tourneau (also Bucherer-owned), then grew rapidly through 2024 and 2025 to include The 1916 Company, Watches of Switzerland, and a growing network of independent Authorized Dealers.

Program Scale (2025–2026)

By mid-2025, approximately 8,500 certified pre-owned Rolex watches were available in inventory across the global RCPO network, with an estimated combined value of around $190 million. Full-year 2025 sales are estimated at $530–$700 million, representing roughly 10–11% of the total estimated Rolex pre-owned market. The program has grown over +60% year-on-year between 2024 and 2025.

Process

How the Rolex CPO Program Works

The RCPO program is built around a multi-step authentication and guarantee process. Here’s how a watch moves from private ownership to the RCPO shelf:

Step 1

Dealer Sourcing

Authorized Dealers source pre-owned Rolex inventory independently — primarily through customer trade-ins and private purchases. Rolex does not supply inventory to the program.

Step 2

Inspection & Authentication

Watches are inspected by Rolex-trained watchmakers — either at accredited AD workshops or at Rolex service centres — to verify authenticity and component genuineness down to individual parts.

Step 3

Servicing if Required

If the inspecting watchmaker determines the watch requires servicing to meet Rolex’s performance standards, it is serviced before certification. Not all watches require full service.

Step 4

Rolex Certification & Guarantee

Rolex signs off on the inspection and issues a new two-year international guarantee. The watch receives the official Rolex Certified Pre-Owned hang tag and seal.

Step 5

Sale at Authorized Dealer

The certified watch is offered for sale at the AD’s showroom or on the AD’s own website. RCPO watches cannot be listed on third-party marketplaces such as eBay or Chrono24.

The 2-Year International Guarantee

Every RCPO watch comes with a new two-year international guarantee issued by Rolex — the same format as the guarantee on a new watch. This guarantee covers manufacturing defects and ensures the watch performs to factory specifications. It is transferable internationally and honoured at any Rolex Authorized Service Centre worldwide.

One important note on timing: the RCPO process has historically taken around three months from the time a dealer sources a watch to when it is certified and ready for sale. Rolex recalibrated its process in early 2025 to distribute more authentication work to accredited AD watchmakers, reducing turnaround time and expanding program capacity. This change was a direct response to a bottleneck at Rolex’s own service centres that had slowed program growth in early 2025.

Pricing

The CPO Price Premium: What You Actually Pay

The most important thing to understand about buying from the Rolex Certified Pre-Owned program is the price you pay relative to the independent secondary market. RCPO watches are consistently more expensive than comparable watches sold by non-participating dealers — sometimes considerably so.

Rolex does not set or control prices for RCPO watches. Each Authorized Dealer sets its own asking price independently. As a result, there is meaningful variation in CPO premiums across the network. In the second quarter of 2025, the average premium for RCPO-certified watches over independently sold equivalents was approximately 30%, though this varies by dealer and geography:

Dealer / Market Approx. CPO Premium vs. Independent Market Notes
Bucherer (Europe) ~42% Highest observed premiums; largest European RCPO retailer.
1916 Company (US) ~16% Most competitive US pricing in the RCPO network.
Programme Average (Q2 2025) ~30% Weighted average across the global RCPO network.

To put that in concrete terms: a Rolex Submariner (ref. 126610LV) trading on the independent secondary market at $14,000 might appear at an RCPO dealer for $16,000–$19,000 or more, depending on the dealer. You are paying for the Rolex-issued authentication, the brand’s two-year guarantee, and the assurance that comes with buying from an official Rolex retailer.

Important for Vintage Collectors

The RCPO process includes servicing and restoration to factory standards where the certifying watchmaker deems it necessary. For serious vintage collectors who prize original unpolished cases, original lume, and untouched movements, a factory-refurbished RCPO watch may actually be less desirable than an honest, original-condition watch sold by a specialist independent dealer. If originality matters to you, verify what service work was performed before purchasing through RCPO.

Rules & Eligibility

Which Rolex Watches Qualify for CPO Certification?

Not every pre-owned Rolex is eligible for the RCPO program. Rolex has established clear criteria that a watch must meet before it can be certified and sold under the program banner.

Requirement Rule (As of May 2025)
Minimum Age At least 2 years old (reduced from 3 years in May 2025)
Authenticity All components must be verified as genuine Rolex parts by a Rolex-trained watchmaker
Condition / Performance Must meet Rolex’s performance standards; serviced to factory spec if required
Seller Requirement Can only be sold by Official Rolex Authorized Dealers participating in the RCPO program
Sale Channel Only at the AD’s own showroom or website; not on third-party marketplaces

The May 2025 Rule Change: Two-Year Minimum

In May 2025, Rolex reduced the minimum eligible age from three years to two years. This was a deliberate response to growing dealer demand for RCPO-eligible inventory and the desire to bring more recently purchased watches into the certified channel. The practical effect is that watches purchased in 2023 can now be sold as RCPO-certified, which significantly expands the pool of eligible inventory available to participating dealers.

What This Means for the Market

Lowering the age threshold to two years allows RCPO dealers to compete more directly with the grey market for recent-model Rolexes. It also means that if you bought a new Rolex in 2023 or later and are considering selling, an RCPO dealer may be interested in sourcing it — though their trade-in offer will still reflect the premium they need to build in before certification. Independent buyers like Le Watch Buyers are not bound by these age restrictions and will evaluate any Rolex regardless of when it was purchased.

For Buyers & Sellers

Rolex CPO vs. Independent Pre-Owned Dealer: How They Compare

The RCPO program offers genuine benefits — and genuine trade-offs. Here is an honest side-by-side comparison to help you decide which route makes more sense for your situation.

Rolex Certified Pre-Owned (RCPO)

Official Brand Certification

  • Rolex-issued 2-year international guarantee

Thinking of Selling? Here’s What the CPO Program Means for You

If you own a Rolex and are researching the CPO program, you may be wondering whether to sell or trade your watch through an RCPO dealer — or to take another route entirely. Understanding the economics helps.

The Trade-In Dynamic at RCPO Dealers

When you bring your watch to an RCPO dealer for a trade-in or purchase, the dealer is not simply paying you the secondary market price. They need to factor in the cost of:

  • Submitting the watch for Rolex certification (which may take weeks to months)
  • Any required servicing to meet RCPO standards
  • Their margin on the certified resale (typically targeting the 16–42% premium)
  • The carrying cost of holding the watch through the certification period

The result is that RCPO dealers frequently offer trade-in values that sit meaningfully below what an independent specialist buyer — who does not face those costs — would pay for the same watch. The AD’s business model is structured around buying at a discount and selling at a premium.

The Independent Buyer Advantage

Le Watch Buyers buys Rolex watches directly, without the overhead of RCPO certification, without the 3-month holding period, and without the need to build in a 16–42% resale premium. That means we can offer you more for your watch than an RCPO dealer’s trade-in. We evaluate at the reference level — using live secondary market data, not static book values — and we respond same day.

What Makes Your Rolex Most Valuable When Selling

Whether you sell through an RCPO dealer, an independent specialist, or privately, the same factors determine what your watch is worth:

Factor Impact on Value Notes
Reference & Dial Colour Very High A turquoise 124300 is worth ~2× a black-dial equivalent. Discontinued dials carry the largest premiums.
Box & Papers (Full Set) High Original Rolex box, outer box, and warranty card typically add $500–$1,500+ for modern references.
Condition / Polish History Significant Over-polished cases lose original edge definition. Unpolished examples with honest wear trade higher.
Service History Moderate Recent Rolex-authorised service adds value for buyers seeking reliability; original movement parts matter more for vintage.
Purchase Year / Age Reference-dependent Some vintage references command premiums over modern equivalents. Newer RCPO-eligible watches (2+ years) have strong demand from RCPO dealers.

FAQ

Rolex Certified Pre-Owned: Frequently Asked Questions

The Rolex Certified Pre-Owned (RCPO) program is Rolex’s official brand-backed certification for second-hand Rolex watches. Launched in December 2022, it allows select Rolex Authorized Dealers to sell pre-owned Rolex watches that have been inspected, authenticated, and guaranteed by Rolex. Each certified watch comes with a new two-year international guarantee and the official Rolex CPO seal. As of 2026, the program operates across approximately 271 retail locations worldwide.
On average, approximately 30% more — though this varies significantly by dealer. In Q2 2025, US-based 1916 Company applied premiums of around 16% over the independent market, while European dealers like Bucherer charged as much as 42% above comparable independent listings. You are paying for the Rolex-issued two-year guarantee and the brand-backed authentication. Rolex does not control or set these prices — each dealer determines their own pricing independently.
Yes, but only through the individual Authorized Dealer’s own website. RCPO watches cannot be listed on third-party marketplaces such as eBay, Chrono24, or WatchBox. Each participating dealer may choose whether to make their RCPO inventory available online; some do, some don’t. If you want to browse RCPO inventory, you need to visit the websites of the specific dealers in the RCPO network (such as Tourneau, Bucherer, 1916 Company, or Watches of Switzerland).
As of May 2025, a Rolex needs to be at least two years old to qualify for RCPO certification. The original rule required the watch to be at least three years old, but Rolex reduced the minimum age in May 2025 to expand inventory availability and allow dealers to certify more recently purchased watches. A watch purchased in 2023 is therefore now eligible.
The RCPO guarantee is a new two-year international guarantee issued by Rolex — the same format as the warranty issued with a new watch. It covers manufacturing defects and confirms the watch performs to factory specifications. It is honoured internationally at any Rolex Authorized Service Centre. However, it begins from the date of CPO certification (or sale), not from the watch’s original production date — and it is two years, not the five-year warranty that now applies to new Rolex watches purchased from December 2023 onward.
In most cases, an independent specialist buyer will offer more for your Rolex than an RCPO dealer’s trade-in. RCPO dealers need to build in the cost of certification, any required servicing, a 3-month holding period through the certification process, and their own resale margin targeting 16–42% above market. Independent buyers like Le Watch Buyers don’t have those overheads — which means we can pay you more. The exception might be if you’re trading your existing Rolex toward a new or RCPO purchase at the same AD, where the convenience of a single transaction has its own value.
Tourneau and Bucherer locations in New York are among the participating RCPO dealers. As the RCPO network continues to expand, additional New York-area Authorized Dealers may join. To find the current list of RCPO participants near you, check the official Rolex website’s dealer locator. Note that RCPO inventory is limited and subject to availability — the approximately 8,500 watches in the global network are spread across 271 locations worldwide, so local inventory can be thin on specific references.
It depends on your priorities. RCPO is unambiguously the right choice if absolute certainty of authenticity and a Rolex-issued guarantee are your primary requirements — particularly for buyers new to the market who want the same assurance as buying new. If you’re an experienced buyer comfortable evaluating condition and authenticity, the 16–42% premium you pay for RCPO certification can be reduced or eliminated by working with a reputable independent specialist who carries out their own expert verification. For vintage watches in particular, the independent market is generally preferable because it preserves originality that RCPO servicing may compromise.
