The Rolex Oyster Case: A Complete History
One hundred years of the case that made the wristwatch waterproof — from a Swiss patent bought through a middleman in 1926 to a titanium case rated to 11,000 meters. Five generations, decoded.
What Is the Rolex Oyster Case?
The Rolex Oyster case is the world’s first commercially successful waterproof wristwatch case, registered as a Rolex trademark on July 29, 1926. It works by sealing the movement behind four separate screw-tightened barriers — the winding crown, the case back, the crystal-and-bezel assembly, and a middle case machined from a single solid block of metal. The original 1926 Oysters measured 28mm or 32mm and came in octagonal or cushion shapes with coin-edge bezels. The same architecture is still in production a century later, now rated to 11,000 meters (36,090 feet) on the Deepsea Challenge. Every Rolex in the current catalog except a handful of jewelry pieces uses a direct descendant of that case.
Almost every account of the Oyster case starts in the same place: Hans Wilsdorf had a brilliant idea, patented it, and the waterproof wristwatch was born. That version is tidy, memorable, and wrong in the details that matter.
The truth is more interesting, and it explains why the Oyster succeeded when a dozen earlier waterproof designs failed. Wilsdorf did not invent the screw-down crown. He bought a patent for one — through a proxy, to conceal his interest — discovered that the design in it did not actually work, and then had Rolex engineer around the problem. What Rolex patented next is what you are still wearing today.
The Patent Rolex Bought — And Then Replaced
On October 30, 1925, two watchmakers from La Chaux-de-Fonds, Paul Perregaux and Georges Perret, filed a Swiss patent for a winding crown that screwed down onto a threaded tube fixed to the watch case. It was granted on May 17, 1926, as Swiss patent number CH 114948.
Wilsdorf, who made a habit of reading the Swiss patent register, saw it immediately for what it was: the missing piece. Earlier “waterproof” watches had solved the case back and the crystal, but never the crown — the one hole in the case that has to open for the watch to function. Some designs enclosed the whole watch in a second outer case, which meant unscrewing and reassembling the thing just to set the time.
Rather than buy the patent himself and drive the price up, Wilsdorf routed the acquisition through Charles Rodolphe Spillmann, who owned a case-making firm in La Chaux-de-Fonds that already supplied Rolex. Spillmann acquired the rights, then transferred them to Wilsdorf on July 24, 1926. Five days later, on July 29, 1926, Wilsdorf registered the word “Oyster” as a Rolex trademark. The British equivalent of the patent was granted the following spring as GB 260554.
The Perregaux and Perret crown was reverse-threaded and had no clutch. Once the mainspring was fully wound, the crown could not be screwed back down to seal the case — which made the patented design essentially unusable in production. Rolex bought it anyway, then filed its own crown patent (CH 120848, filed October 18, 1926) and a separate waterproof case patent (CH 120851). Early Oyster case backs are stamped with multiple patent numbers precisely because two separate inventions, in two jurisdictions, were doing the work.
The first Oysters reached the market in 1926 as a group of four models aimed at both men and women. They measured 28mm or 32mm and came with either octagonal or cushion-shaped cases — Art Deco proportions for an Art Deco decade. The bezels were coin-edged, which was not decoration: the milling gave the watchmaker something to grip while screwing the bezel down against the middle case. That coin edge is the direct ancestor of the fluted bezel Rolex still uses today. Movements at this stage came from Aegler in Biel, the Swiss manufacturer that supplied Rolex for decades before being absorbed into the company.
The Four Seals: What Actually Makes an Oyster an Oyster
Strip away the marketing and an Oyster case is a specific engineering proposition: four independent barriers, each one tightened by a screw thread, protecting a single sealed chamber. Change any one of them and it stops being an Oyster. Here is what each one does.
The Screw-Down Crown
Threads into a tube fixed to the middle case. The 1926 original sealed with metal gaskets. The Twinlock crown of 1953 added two sealed zones using synthetic O-rings; the Triplock of 1970 added a third.
The Screw-Down Case Back
Edged with fine fluting so a dedicated tool can torque it hermetically against the middle case. That fluting has been on every Oyster case back for a century and is still there on current models.
The Crystal and Bezel
On the earliest Oysters the bezel screwed down and compressed the crystal against the case. Modern versions seat the crystal on a gasket under pressure from the bezel or, on deep divers, a compression ring.
The Monobloc Middle Case
The most overlooked one. The center of the case is machined from a single solid block of metal — no joints, no seams, nothing bonded. There is simply no path for water through the case walls.
The fourth seal is the reason the design has lasted. The first three are ideas other manufacturers eventually copied; every dive watch on the market now has a screwed case back and a screw-down crown. But cutting a case middle from solid stock, rather than assembling it, is expensive, slow, and unglamorous — and it removes the entire category of failure that comes from joining two pieces of metal together.
Wilsdorf chose “Oyster” because the case closes on itself the way an oyster shell does — the crown, bezel, and back all compress inward against the middle case to form one sealed body. The name was registered on July 29, 1926, five days after the crown patent changed hands, which tells you how quickly he moved once he understood what he had.
The Vindication Swim: How the Oyster Was Proven
A waterproof case is only worth something if people believe it. In 1927 Wilsdorf found the proof he needed in a British endurance swimmer named Mercedes Gleitze — and most retellings of this story get the sequence backwards.
On October 7, 1927, Gleitze became the first British woman to swim the English Channel, crossing from France to England in 15 hours and 15 minutes on her eighth attempt. Days later another swimmer, Dr. Dorothy Cochrane Logan, claimed a faster crossing, then admitted the claim was a hoax. The fraud cast doubt on Gleitze’s genuine achievement by association. Refusing to sign an affidavit on principle, she said she would simply swim it again.
That second attempt, on October 21, 1927, became known as the Vindication Swim — and it is the one Rolex was part of. Gleitze entered the water at 4:21 a.m. wearing a gold Rolex Oyster on a ribbon around her neck, fully exposed to the sea. Conditions were far worse than on her first crossing, with water temperatures between 51°F and 58°F. After ten hours and twenty-four minutes she was pulled unconscious from the water, several miles short of the English coast.
The swim failed. The watch did not. The Oyster came out of ten hours of open-sea immersion still running and still accurate. Gleitze wrote to Rolex four days later confirming it had kept time throughout the crossing despite prolonged immersion and constant buffeting.
On November 24, 1927, Rolex bought the entire front page of the Daily Mail to announce it. It was one of the most effective pieces of product marketing in the history of watchmaking, and it established a pattern Rolex has followed ever since: prove the case in public, under conditions no customer will ever face.
Gleitze’s actual watch — an extremely early pre-production Oyster, reference 34075, with an octagonal case, gilt pink dial, and Glasgow import hallmarks for 1926/27 — resurfaced at auction in Geneva on November 9, 2025. Its case back is engraved “Miss M. Gleitze. The Companion ‘Oyster.’ Vindication Channel Swim. October 21st. 1927.” It sold for CHF 1.39 million, roughly $1.73 million. The same watch had sold in 2000 for just over £17,000. Nothing illustrates the collector market’s appetite for original, documented Oyster cases more directly than a hundredfold increase across twenty-five years.
The Five Generations of the Oyster Case
The Oyster case is often described as unchanged for a hundred years. It is more accurate to say the principle is unchanged while the execution has been rebuilt five separate times. Each generation is identifiable on sight once you know what you are looking at — which matters, because generation determines both how your watch should be serviced and what it is worth.
The Sealed Box
1926 – 1952The founding architecture, proven and then refined. Cases were small by modern standards, crystals were acrylic, and the crown sealed with metal gaskets rather than synthetic rubber. The defining addition came in 1931, when Rolex patented the self-winding Perpetual rotor and married it to the Oyster case — producing the first wristwatch that was simultaneously waterproof and self-winding.

The Twinlock Era
1953 – 19661953 is the year the Oyster stopped being a dress-watch feature and became professional equipment. Rolex introduced the Twinlock winding crown, with two independently sealed zones — one inside the tube, one inside the crown — and used it to launch the Submariner, the first divers’ watch guaranteed waterproof to 100 meters (330 feet). In parallel, Rolex began the Deep Sea Special program with Auguste and Jacques Piccard, strapping experimental oversized Oysters to the outside of bathyscaphes.

The Pressure Era
1967 – 1987Saturation diving created a problem no seal could fix. Helium atoms are small enough to migrate into a sealed case under pressure in a hyperbaric chamber; during decompression, the pressure inside the case can exceed the pressure outside and blow the crystal off. Rolex’s answer was to stop trying to keep helium out and instead let it back out safely — a one-way escape valve, filed as a patent on November 6, 1967. Three years later the Triplock crown added a third sealed zone. The proving ground for all of it was the French commercial diving company Comex, whose saturation divers were issued specially marked Submariners and Sea-Dwellers for three decades; those Rolex COMEX watches are now among the most valuable sports Rolexes in existence.

The Modernization Era
1988 – 2007Less dramatic than the decades on either side, and more consequential for what a Rolex feels like on the wrist. Rolex acquired the Spillmann case-making operation in 1988, bringing case production fully in-house for the first time since 1926. Over the following two decades the case grew heavier and more substantial: thicker lugs, wider crown guards, solid end links replacing folded ones, and reference numbers stepping from five digits to six as whole model families were re-engineered.

The Engineered Era
2008 – PresentThe current generation stops treating the case as one sealed box and starts treating it as a load-bearing structure. The Ringlock System, introduced on the Deepsea in 2008, splits the job of resisting pressure across three superposed components so that no single part carries the whole load. It is the first genuinely new case architecture Rolex has produced since 1926, and it is what made a 3,900-meter production watch possible.

2026 marks one hundred years since the Oyster trademark was registered. The case has been in continuous production across that entire span, which makes it one of the longest-running product architectures in any manufacturing industry — not just watchmaking.

No commercially available pressure tank could reach that figure, so Rolex developed a dedicated ultra-high-pressure tank in partnership with the French deep-sea engineering firm Comex specifically to run the test. That partnership goes back more than fifty years — and produced the company-issued dive watches that now bring six figures at auction.

The material a case is cut from affects how it wears, how it polishes, and what it is worth on the secondary market. Four matter.
Oystersteel (904L)
Rolex became the first watchmaker to machine cases from solid 904L steel in 1985, a superalloy normally used in aerospace and chemical plant. It resists corrosion far better than the 316L used industry-wide and takes a distinctly brighter polish. Formally named Oystersteel in 2018.
18 kt Gold
Rolex casts its own yellow, white, and Everose gold in an in-house foundry. Everose, introduced in 2005, is a rose gold alloy with a small platinum content that resists the fading common to pink golds over decades of wear.
RLX Titanium
Introduced on the Deepsea Challenge in 2022 and rolled out from 2023, RLX titanium made an 11,000-meter case wearable. A steel Deepsea Challenge would have been impractically heavy at 50mm across and 23mm thick.
Platinum & Rolesor
Platinum 950 for the rarest references, and Rolesor — Rolex’s trademarked combination of steel and gold on a single case — in production since the 1930s and still a large share of Datejust and Day-Date output.
One practical consequence for owners: 904L is harder to work than standard stainless steel, which means a poorly executed polish on an Oystersteel case is both more likely to remove material unevenly and more expensive to correct. That leads directly to the part of this history that affects your watch’s value today.
The Case Condition Ladder
When we appraise a Rolex, the case is the first thing examined and frequently the largest single variable in the offer. Dials and bracelets matter, but a dial can be original on a case that has been ruined. Here is the ladder we work down, from the top.
Unpolished, Factory Geometry Intact
Never been to a polishing wheel. Lug bevels are crisp, the transition between brushed and polished surfaces is sharp, case thickness sits at factory specification, and between-lug engravings are fully legible. Scratches and dings are present and are not a problem — they are evidence.
Highest tier — commands a clear premium on vintage referencesLightly Polished, Geometry Preserved
One careful service polish, performed by someone who masked the brushed surfaces and did not chase every mark. Lug edges are still defined, the case profile still reads correctly in profile view. Common on well-kept modern references and largely accepted by the market.
Minimal impact on modern referencesPolished, Softened Geometry
Multiple polishes, or one aggressive one. Bevels are rounded, the crisp line where the lug top meets the lug side has blurred, and drilled lug holes may look enlarged or oval. The watch still presents well to a casual eye but a specialist sees it instantly.
Measurable deduction, larger on vintageOver-Polished or Re-Cut
Material removed to the point where lugs are visibly thinned, case sides are concave, or the reference and serial engravings between the lugs have gone faint or disappeared entirely. On a collectible reference this is the difference between a strong offer and a modest one.
Significant deduction on all erasReplaced or Service Case
The case is not the one the watch left the factory in. Historically, Rolex service centers replaced worn cases and parts as a matter of routine, which severed the link between the serial number and the rest of the watch. Identifiable by mismatched serial and reference data, inconsistent finishing, or engraving depth that does not match the era.
Heaviest deduction — documentation matters most hereTwo things worth saying plainly. First: do not polish a Rolex before selling it. The instinct is understandable and it is almost always wrong. A buyer who wants a polished case can have one done; a buyer who wants an unpolished case cannot undo yours. Second: a service-replaced case is not fraud and does not make a watch worthless — it makes it a watch that needs to be described accurately, which is a very different problem.

Checking a between-lug serial means taking the bracelet off, and spring bars on vintage references can be brittle. A slipped tool leaves a permanent scratch across the lug — exactly the surface you least want marked, because it is the one that cannot be corrected without polishing away material. If you are not confident, don’t. A watchmaker will do it in thirty seconds, and so will we during an appraisal.
